Tips for buying a TV on Cyber Monday

Should you wait for a Cyber Monday TV deal?

Often we can firmly say yes to this question as Cyber Monday and Black Friday offer such huge savings compared to what is normally on offer, but with TVs it's a little different. Because there are so many TVs out there you're sure to be able to find a great deal any time of the year so waiting for a certain set isn't so necessary.

Additionally, TVs are incredibly popular purchases around Cyber Monday, and with the threat of stock shortages looming you might not want to wait if you're desperate to get a specific display.

Our advice would be to pick out a few TVs that you're interested in and keep an eye on them over the Black Friday / Cyber Monday period. Once one hits a price that you're happy with, nab it while you can.

Best TVs to look out for on Cyber Monday

For the most part, the older a TV model is, the bigger discounts you'll see for it. And as TV tech typically gets better year on year, this year's Cyber Monday could present an excellent opportunity to nab some of the best TVs ever made an discounted prices.

Cyber Monday will be an excellent time to buy a superb display if you're on a budget. High-end TVs will receive some decent discounts, while mid-range TVs - including 4K HDR capable screens - usually become much more affordable.

Those who may have been fortunate to come away with a PS5 Cyber Monday deal or Xbox Series X Cyber Monday deal will also want to look for TVs that support HDMI 2.1. This is the technology that will allow you to get the most from games that are designed to be played in 4K at 120Hz for the smoothest experience.

1. LG C1 OLED Series

New for 2021, the LG C1 OLED is the current king of TVs

Screen size: 48-inch, 55-inch, 65-inch, 77-inch | Resolution: 4K | Panel type: OLED | Smart TV: webOS | HDR: HDR, HLG, Dolby Vision

Beautiful 4K/HDR picture

Four HDMI 2.1 ports

WebOS is fantastic

Reflective glass surface

No HDR10+

The LG C1 OLED may be an iterative change on last year's LG CX, but it still outperforms huge swathes of the UHD TV market with its OLED images, excellent black levels, infinite contrast, and impressive feature set.

This 2021 doesn't up the stakes quite as much as the Samsung QN95A, with its inclusion of Mini LED – which takes the best 4K TV spot for that reason. But you're still getting a knockout screen and one of the very best 4K TVs on the market today.

The LG C1 uses LG's latest Alpha a9 Gen. 4 processor for better upscaling and virtual surround sound audio, and with four separate HDMI 2.1 ports, it's ready for the PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and whatever next-gen consoles can throw at it. Gamers will also appreciate the new Game Optimiser menu that gives you the option to quickly adjust brightness, contrast and VRR on the fly.

The LG C1 is quite pricey, and being so new we might not see it get a massive discount this year, but if you're after a great TV even a slight saving during Cyber Monday is worth looking out for.

The Panasonic HX800 is the best TV on a budget, pictured here on a wooden media cabinet

3. Panasonic HX800

The Panasonic HX800 is the best TV to buy on the cheap

Screen size: 40-inch, 50-inch, 58-inch, 65-inch | Resolution: 4K | Panel Type: LCD | Smart TV: My Home Screen 5.0 | HDR: HDR10, HLG, Dolby Vision, HDR10+

Multi-HDR support

Filmic HCX image processing

Only three HDMI

Similar to 2019 model

As the 2020 successor to the GX800, the HX800 continues everything that made us fall in love with Panasonic's mid-range flatscreen TV offering in the first place, with a sweet spot of price, performance, and functionality all in one.

Panasonic gets a lot of goodwill by offering multi-HDR support – throwing in HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and HLG in a single set – and is also unique in how this support is implemented across so much of its TV range. As a mid-range LCD, it's incredible that Panasonic ensures it has the same format support as higher-end OLED TVs like the new HZ1000 and HZ1500.

Add to that Panasonic's HCX processor, with filmic images and smooth action far beyond what we'd hope for at this price point, and you have a clear winner. This will be especially true during Cyber Monday.

Savings are quite likely during this year's deals event as this is a 2020 set. Given that the HX800 is already such a great deal, you absolutely want to keep an eye on it.

3. Samsung QN95A Neo QLED

The arrival of Mini LED only enhances the best TVs from Samsung

Screen size: 55-inch, 65-inch, 75-inch | Resolution: 4K | Panel technology: Neo QLED | Smart TV: Tizen | HDR: HDR10, HLG, HDR10+

Stellar picture quality

Impressive sound system

No Dolby Vision or Atmos

Freeview Play would be nice

The Samsung QN95A is the company's new flagship Neo QLED 4K TV for 2021, and the first to embrace a Mini LED backlight, resulting in a significant increase in dimmable zones and thinner panels.

The results speak for themselves, with superb SDR and HDR images that benefit from deep blacks and brighter highlights, all of which are delivered without blooming or loss of shadow detail.

The QN95A can deliver over 2,000 nits in its Dynamic picture mode, and over 1,600 nits in the more accurate Filmmaker mode. This means that for a lot of HDR content the TV doesn't even need to tone map, but when it does apply tone-mapping this is done correctly, ensuring detail is retained in the darkest and brightest parts of the image, and retaining creative intent. (Just keep in mind that you'll be making do with HDR10+ support rather than the more prevalent Dolby Vision HDR standard.)

This is another triumph of industrial design from Samsung, with a minimalist but elegant shape, solid metal stand, and nearly bezel-less screen. It's not just one of the best TVs – it's one of the best-looking flatscreens out there.

And if you want to own one Cyber Monday will be a great time to look for a deal on it. Even if you don't find a massive deal on this set, Samsung has a great range of more affordable QLEDs that might be discounted further over the deals period. You just have to keep an eye out.
